Coverage

A 120-mile reach from Fort Wayne

Short Excavating is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana and works within roughly a 120-mile radius, which carries us across northern Indiana and into parts of Ohio and Michigan. If your project is within about two hours of the shop, the owner can bring the equipment and handle it.

Below are the counties we serve. Each one has its own page with the cities we cover and the services we offer there. Wherever you are in the range, you get the same owner-operated standard: the owner on the job, the work checked as it goes in, and a real number before we start.

The services do not change with the location either. Across the whole range we handle forestry mulching, land clearing, driveway installation, French drains and drainage, site prep and grading, demolition, site utilities, and full commercial work from commercial excavation to site development.

Where we work

The center of our range.

Short Excavating runs out of Fort Wayne, the hub of a roughly 120-mile range that reaches across northern Indiana and into Ohio and Michigan.

Why Short

One owner, the same standard across the whole range

A 120-mile service range is wide for an owner-operated excavator, and it is deliberate. The owner would rather travel for the right job than hand work off to a crew just to stay close to home. It means a homeowner two hours out gets the same person walking their property, running the equipment and checking the grade as a customer down the road from the shop.

Across all three states the work is the same: gravel driveways, drainage and French drains, forestry mulching and clearing, site prep, demolition, utilities and full commercial sitework. And the reason to hire an owner-operated excavator does not change with distance: one person knows your job, does the work, and answers for it.

If your town is not on a county page, it does not necessarily mean we cannot help. The lists cover the main communities, but the range is a radius, not a fixed list. Call the owner with your location and your project, and he will tell you straight whether it is a fit.

Across the range

Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, one standard of work

Short Excavating’s home base is Fort Wayne, and the bulk of our work is across northern Indiana, but the service range deliberately reaches into Ohio and Michigan. In Indiana that includes the fast-growing communities of Hamilton, Boone, Hendricks and Hancock counties around the Indianapolis ring, the Porter County corridor up toward the lake, and the rural stretches of LaGrange County. In Ohio it reaches the Delaware County communities north of Columbus. In Michigan it covers Livingston and Oakland counties in the Detroit metro’s western and northern suburbs.

That is a lot of ground for an owner-operated company, and it is a choice. The owner would rather load the equipment and travel for a job he can do right than stay close and hand work to a crew. Whether the property is in Carmel, Valparaiso, Powell, Brighton or Royal Oak, the person who walks the site and runs the machine is the same, and so is the attention to the slope, the base, the compaction and the drainage that decides whether the work lasts.

One more thing worth knowing about working with an owner-operated company across this kind of range: you are never passed around. There is no office that books the job, a salesperson who quotes it, and a crew who shows up not knowing what was promised. The owner is the one constant from your first phone call through the final grade.

Straight answers

Questions, answered.

If yours isn’t here, just call the owner and ask.

How far do you travel for a job?

Roughly 120 miles out of Fort Wayne, which covers northern Indiana and parts of Ohio and Michigan. If you are within about two hours, call the owner.

Which states do you work in?

Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, within the service range. We have counties listed in all three.

Do you charge more for jobs farther out?

Travel can factor into a job farther from Fort Wayne. The owner is straight about that when he gives you the number, no surprises.

Do you handle large commercial jobs across the area?

Yes. Distance does not change what we can do. Commercial excavation, site prep, utilities, heavy earthwork and full site development are all available across the service range.

My town is not listed, can you still help?

Probably, if it is within the range. The county pages list the main towns, but call the owner with your location and he will tell you straight.

Get in touch

Not sure if you’re in range? Just ask.

The county pages and the map are a guide, not a hard boundary. The service range is a radius out of Fort Wayne, so a town that is not listed on a county page may still be well within reach. The fastest way to know is to call the owner, tell him where the project is, and let him give you a straight answer about whether it is a fit and what it would take to get out there.

Distance also does not change what the company can do. Whether you are fifteen minutes from the shop or close to two hours out, you get the full range of services, the same owner on the controls, the same attention to the grade and the drainage, and the same straight pricing. The only thing that changes with distance is that travel may factor into the number — and the owner will tell you that up front, like everything else.
