Services

Dirt to finish grade, under one owner

Short Excavating handles the full range of excavation and sitework for homeowners, contractors and commercial clients across the Fort Wayne region. Because the same owner runs every service, the pieces of a project fit together: the clearing sets up the site prep, the grading sets up the driveway, the drainage is planned with the grade. Browse the services below to see exactly what is involved and how we do it.

Why one owner

The advantage of one owner across the whole project

Most excavation projects are not one service, they are a sequence. A new home site gets cleared, then prepped, then the pad goes in, then drainage and utilities, then final grade. A drainage fix often needs regrading. A driveway needs a base and a culvert. When those steps are split across different outfits, the seams are where problems live: the clearing crew leaves the ground in a state the prep crew has to redo, the utility line crosses the grade wrong, nobody owns the drainage, and the schedule slips in the gaps between handoffs.

Short Excavating runs the whole sequence under one owner, which is the quiet advantage behind everything on this page. The clearing is done with the prep in mind, the prep with the pad in mind, the utilities and drainage planned alongside the grade. One person who walked the site at the start is accountable for the finished result, so the pieces fit and the job keeps moving. For a homeowner that means less hassle and a result that works. For a contractor or developer it means a site delivered on plan and on schedule.

You do not need to know the exact name of the service you need before you call. Most people describe a problem — a wet yard, a lot they cannot use, a driveway that washes out, a site they need ready to build — and the owner translates that into the right work. Sometimes it is one service, often it is a combination, and occasionally a smaller fix than expected solves it. Either way you get an honest recommendation from the person who will actually do the job, not an upsell from someone working a commission.

Who we serve

Built for homeowners and contractors alike

About half of what Short Excavating does is for homeowners — driveways, drainage, land clearing, forestry mulching and yard grading on residential property, where the owner’s care with someone’s land is exactly what people are looking for. The other half is for general contractors, builders and commercial clients who need site prep, building pads, utilities, demolition and full site development delivered to plan and on schedule.

What ties it together is that the standard never changes with the size of the job. A backyard French drain and a commercial building pad both get the owner setting and checking the grade, bedding pipe in stone, compacting properly, and answering for the result. That consistency is rare in this trade, and it is the whole reason the company is built the way it is.

Straight answers

Questions, answered.

If yours isn’t here, just call the owner and ask.

Do you handle both residential and commercial work?

Yes. From a homeowner’s driveway or drainage to commercial site development, utilities and demolition, the same owner runs all of it to the same standard.

Can one company really do all of this?

Yes, and it is the advantage. Because the owner coordinates clearing, earthwork, drainage, utilities and grading, the project fits together instead of being split across outfits that do not line up.

What area do you cover?

Fort Wayne and roughly 120 miles out, across Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. See our service areas page for the counties and cities.

Are you available for emergency work?

Yes. We offer emergency water and emergency sewer services for failed or broken lines and move quickly to get the dig open and the line back in service.

How do I get a price?

Call the owner, tell him about the project, and he walks the site and gives you a real number before any work starts.

Any size job

From a back acre to a commercial site

No two excavation jobs are the same, and the range Short Excavating covers is wide on purpose. On the small end it might be a single yard drain over a wet spot, a short gravel approach, or mulching a quarter acre of brush. On the large end it is a full commercial site: clearing, mass earthwork, building pads, utilities, storm water and final grade, sequenced and delivered to plan. The owner handles both ends of that range and everything in between, with the same care and the same accountability.

If you are early in a project and not sure what it will involve, that is fine and common. Tell the owner what you are trying to end up with — a buildable lot, a yard that drains, a driveway that holds, a site ready for a slab — and he will lay out what it takes to get there, what it will cost, and the order the work should happen in. There is no charge to have that conversation and no pressure that comes with it.
